Location

Gurney Drive

Most visitors to Gurney Drive leave thinking they've experienced Malaysian food. They haven't. Real Gurney Drive tastes like a charcoal wok at midnight, a curry that has been simmering since dawn, and a kuih lady who remembers your order from last time.

Gurney Drive hawker centre is Penang's most famous eating spot. Char kway teow, assam laksa, and rojak under one roof, facing the sea.

A Tour Built Around You

We do not have a fixed tour here yet, but that does not mean you miss out. Our Tailored Experience lets you build a private tour around what you want to eat, see, and learn. Tell us your group size, dietary needs, and preferred neighbourhoods, and we will design a route with our best local guides.

How It Works

Three steps to eating like a local

1

Pick your adventure

Choose the tour that matches your taste — join a small group or book a private experience. Every route is built around the real food locals actually eat.

2

Meet your guide

A local who knows every stall, every hawker, and every story behind the food. This is the person who grew up eating here — they'll take you where guidebooks can't.

3

Eat without worry

8+ stops, 3–4 hours, one incredible meal. Every dish is vetted, every stall is trusted, and every bite comes with a story. You just show up and enjoy.

What Makes It Special

Iconic Hawker Dining by the Sea

The People

Family-run stalls that have been feeding their neighborhoods for decades. Gurney Drive's hawkers take pride in recipes passed down through generations — and our guides personally know the stories behind each one.

The Places

Hidden alleyways, bustling markets, and streets that transform at night. The best food in Gurney Drive lives where the locals eat — not where the guidebooks send you.

The Stories

Gurney Drive's food tells the story of migration, trade, and community — Chinese kopitiams, Indian banana leaf joints, Malay warungs. Every dish carries a history.

Gurney Drive hawker centre is Penang's most famous eating destination — a seafront collection of stalls that draws crowds from across the island. This is where you come for the full spectrum of Penang street food.

The star here is char koay teow, made the Penang way — with wok hei, that smoky breath of the wok that you simply cannot replicate anywhere else. Loaded with cockles, pork lard, bean sprouts, and Chinese sausage, the definitive version comes from Ping Hui. Every other CKT in Malaysia is measured against this benchmark.

But Gurney Drive offers so much more. Assam Laksa, that unforgettable hybrid of sweet, savoury, and sour — tamarind, chilli, and a rich mackerel base combining in every spoonful. Penang-style pasembur, a spicy fruit and vegetable salad with sweet potato sauce. Fresh seafood grilled over charcoal.

Guests consistently say the moment they try Penang Assam Laksa for the first time is the highlight of their trip. It is a dish that tests every sense — the sour from tamarind catches you off guard, the chilli warmth builds, the fish base grounds it all. And then the char koay teow with its legendary wok hei — the taste of Penang itself.

Evenings at Gurney Drive are when the hawker centre truly comes alive. The sea breeze, the sizzle of woks, the smell of satay grilling — this is Penang dining at its most iconic.
