How It Works

Three steps to eating like a local

1

Pick your adventure

Choose the tour that matches your taste — join a small group or book a private experience. Every route is built around the real food locals actually eat.

2

Meet your guide

A local who knows every stall, every hawker, and every story behind the food. This is the person who grew up eating here — they'll take you where guidebooks can't.

3

Eat without worry

8+ stops, 3–4 hours, one incredible meal. Every dish is vetted, every stall is trusted, and every bite comes with a story. You just show up and enjoy.

What Makes It Special

The People, the Places, the Stories

This is what makes Families worth exploring.

The People

The hawkers who welcome children because they have fed this neighbourhood's kids for years. The roti canai aunty who will make a plain, unsweetened version for small eaters. The dessert seller who gives every child an extra scoop. The satay uncle who lets kids watch the skewers turn over the charcoal. These are the vendors chosen for family tours, people who treat children as part of the neighbourhood, not an interruption.

The Places

the George Town heritage lanes. Covered hawker centres where kids can move around and parents can relax, open seating, gentle spice, food that arrives fast. Neighbourhoods with plenty of shade and short distances between stops. And the dessert stops that make children forget they were ever hungry.

The Stories

Almost every family tour ends with a child eating something they refused to try an hour earlier. It is usually a skewer, or a scoop of cendol, or a piece of sweet kuih watched being made. Once a child sees food being cooked in front of them, most of the fear goes away, and the tour becomes a game of what will we try next. That is the family tour in practice: patient pacing, patient guides, and food that does the convincing.

A family food tour in Penang means everyone enjoys it, and that is the whole point. The kids get food that arrives fast and tastes mild, the grown-ups get the full range of Malaysian cooking, and nobody spends the walk negotiating with a hungry, tired child. A Simply Enak family food tour in Penang is paced with children in mind: the George Town heritage lanes, shorter walks, bathroom breaks, and stalls where your guide happily slows down for kid-sized questions. You taste the dishes Penang is well-known for, char kway teow, cendol, and the mild savoury plates that suit small eaters, without the spice stress. Small groups of no more than nine keep it personal, and your guide plans the route so it works for your family's ages.

Is the food too spicy for kids?

Not on the family tours. Your guide asks about spice tolerance before you start and balances the route between mild and sweet dishes, with chilli always served on the side. Kids end up eating mild roti canai, sweet kuih, and plenty of dessert, and the gentle versions are how many local families eat with children too.

How long are the walks?

The family route keeps walking short, with several seated stops, shade, and a comfortable pace. The whole walk is around two and a half to three hours. If a child is tired, the guide is happy to slow down or finish early, and nobody minds a pause.

What if my child will not eat the food?

That happens, and it is completely fine. There is always a mild dish on the table, and the dessert stops are a safe win. More often than not children surprise everyone, because watching food being made in front of them is half the appeal. Since 2011, Simply Enak has been showing guests the real Malaysia, and we have never met a kid who left a family food tour unhappy.

What to expect

  • 8+ tasting stops over 3-4 hours with a local guide who knows every stall owner
  • Small groups (max 8) so you actually talk to the people cooking your food
  • From RM289 per person for join-in tours; private tours available

Who this might not be for

  • If you need wheelchair-accessible routes, contact us first — some areas have limited access
  • If you're looking for fine dining — we do street food and hawker stalls, not restaurants
  • If you're travelling with kids under 5 — some tours involve walking on uneven streets
