Georgetown's Best Hawkers and the Durian Strip

Об Этом Туре

Simply Enak's most-loved Penang tour starts as the sun sets.

George Town comes alive as the heat of the day fades. This tour starts at sunset, when the city hawkers begin arriving at their evening spots and the colonial-era streets take on a different character. We start at a popiah stall in the heart of the UNESCO zone. Popiah is a fresh spring roll - thin rice paper wrapper stuffed with jicama, carrot, tofu, bean sprouts, and chilli, topped with shallots and a sweet soy glaze. The auntie who makes them has been doing this since 1985. Next, we walk through Little India as the jewellery shops wind down and the banana leaf rice restaurants fill up. We stop at a corner stall that serves the best vadai in George Town - crunchy lentil fritters with a coconut chutney made using the same recipe for three generations. The tour continues through the Armenian Street heritage area, where we taste cendol and apom from street vendors in front of pre-war shophouses. Your guide will point out the street art and share stories about Penang history. We end at a clan jetty - one of the six wooden villages built over the water by Chinese immigrant clans in the 19th century. Here, a third-generation resident serves home-cooked Peranakan food: buah keluak, inchi kabin, and acar. The view of the mainland lights across the channel is worth the walk alone. Throughout the tour, your guide will connect each dish to George Town history as a British trading post, a Chinese immigrant gateway, and a Malay fishing village.

Questions We Often Hear

What happens if it rains?

We tour rain or shine — many of our best food discoveries are under covered walkways and indoor markets. In rare cases of extreme weather we'll reschedule or refund.

Do we get to meet the vendors?

That's the whole point. We take you to family-run stalls where the owner will shake your hand, show you their technique, and share the story behind their recipe. It's not a restaurant visit — it's a visit to someone's life's work.

Can children join the tour?

Absolutely. Kids under 6 join free, and our guides know how to keep them engaged. The walking pace is gentle with plenty of seating stops. Let us know ages when booking so we can prepare.

What if I have a food allergy?

Flag it when you book and we'll brief your guide. Malaysian cooking uses peanuts, shrimp paste, and soy frequently — but we know which stalls can accommodate and which to avoid. We take allergies seriously.

Is the tour suitable for solo travellers?

Very much so. Around 30% of our guests come alone. You'll be in a small group of 2-8 people, and our guides are experts at bringing everyone into the conversation. Many solo travellers tell us it's the highlight of their trip.

What's included in a private tour?

Everything on a join-in tour, plus a fully customisable route, your own dedicated guide, flexible timing, and the freedom to linger where you want. It's your evening — you set the pace.

Do you offer private tours?

Your guide will confirm the exact meeting point after booking. We always meet at a recognisable landmark — a train station exit or a well-known building — with clear directions.

What's your cancellation policy?

No stress. Message your guide and they'll adjust the route so you don't miss the best parts. We build buffer time into every tour.

Do I need to book in advance?

We recommend booking at least 24 hours ahead so we can confirm availability with our vendors.

How quickly do you respond?

We reply within 3 hours during business hours (9am-8pm Malaysia time). On WhatsApp it is usually within minutes.

What happens if it rains?

Tours run rain or shine. Many food stops have covered seating. In extreme weather we will reschedule.

Is the food spicy?

Malaysian food has heat, but your guide will help navigate spice levels. Mild options are always available.
