Little India Penang
Penang has the popular street food in Asia, but finding the right stalls without a local means queuing at tourist traps while the real gems stay hidden. We know exactly who does what dish best.
Your local guide will lead you through aromatic spice stalls and heritage coffee shops to taste freshly made dosa and rich curries. You will learn about the cultural history of the neighborhood while sharing a traditional meal with the vendors who make it.
Sound familiar?
The paralysis of choice
Penang has hundreds of hawker stalls. The well-known ones have long queues and inflated prices. The real gems don't advertise. Without a local, you'll pick based on Instagram likes and miss what makes Penang actually special.

What Makes It Special
Food Tours in Penang
The People
The hawkers who've made Penang the street food capital of Asia. These aren't restaurant chefs, they're stallholders who've dedicated their lives to a single dish, often working the same spot for 30+ years. Every bowl of Char Koay Teow tells you something about the person who cooked it.
The Places
George Town's heritage streets where the popular hawker stalls hide behind century-old shophouses. The air-conditioned kopitiams where Hokkien families gather. The night markets along Gurney Drive. And the quiet neighborhood stalls where locals eat, the ones that never make it to any 'popular of' list.
The Stories
Penang's food is the story of the Straits, where Chinese traders, Malay royalty, and European colonizers created a culture that's unlike anywhere else. Penang was the first British settlement in Southeast Asia, and its food reflects every wave of migration that followed. It's not just street food, it's 200 years of history on a plate.

Little India in Penang is where you go for the boldest, most aromatic food on the island. Banana leaf rice, fresh roti canai, and the legendary nasi kandar — a dish that tells the story of Malaysia's Indian-Muslim community.
The name nasi kandar itself tells the story. Nasi is rice. Kandar is the pole used to carry two buckets. Indian-Muslim vendors walked through the port with one bucket of rice and one of curry, selling to workers who had no time to sit down. Today, it is Penang's most beloved comfort food.
Penang's Indian food scene is distinct from KL's. The island's history as a Straits Settlement created deeper integration between Indian and Malay culinary traditions. You taste this in the unique spice blends, the use of asam (tamarind), and the sheer variety of banana leaf meals available.
On this tour, you'll taste murtabak stuffed with spiced meat and egg, pasembur (Penang's own spicy fruit and vegetable salad), and fresh-baked roti canai that shatters at the touch of a fork. And of course, nasi kandar — rice with an array of curries and accompaniments that you choose yourself.
For dessert? Cendol — shaved ice with green rice flour jelly, coconut milk, and gula Melaka (palm sugar). Penang's version is considered the best in Malaysia.
