What Makes This Tour Different
Not Your Typical Tourist Route
Most Tourists
- Eat at the same 5 stalls on Jalan Alor
- Never meet the people behind the food
- Leave without understanding the cultural stories
- Follow a guidebook, not a local
With Simply Enak
- Visit family-run stalls we've known for 14+ years
- Meet Aunty Lim, Master Chen, Chef Raj — not just their food
- Learn why char kway teow became political in the 1960s
- Walk with guides who grew up eating at these stalls
We've been eating in these neighborhoods for 14+ years. Every vendor on this tour is someone we actually know — not a business arrangement, but a friendship. You'll taste the same dishes our families have been eating for generations, and hear the stories that make them matter.

Common Questions
Questions We Often Hear
How many people join each tour?
Maximum 9 guests per join-in tour. Small enough that you can actually talk with the vendors, ask questions, and eat without feeling rushed. Private tours go at your own pace with your own group.
What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that plans change. Cancel up to 48 hours before your tour for a full refund. Cancellations within 48 hours are non-refundable, but we're happy to reschedule to another date if we have availability. For private tours, please contact us directly.
I'm vegetarian — will there be enough to eat?
Malaysia has deep Buddhist and Hindu vegetarian traditions, so yes. Every tour has strong plant-based options. Tell us when you book and your guide will call out vegetarian dishes at every stop. You won't go hungry.
Are the tours halal-friendly?
Yes. All Simply Enak tours are fully halal-friendly. Malaysia's hawker culture is predominantly halal and we specifically choose stalls that meet this standard. If you have specific concerns, just ask when you book.
How much walking is involved?
Around 2–3 km over 4–5 hours, with frequent stops to eat, listen, and ask questions. The pace is relaxed. Terrain is generally flat in both KL and Penang hawker areas. If anyone in your group has mobility concerns, let us know and we'll plan accordingly.
What should I bring?
Comfortable shoes, light clothing, and an appetite. Cash in ringgit is useful (RM 50–100) as some stalls are cash-only. A small bag for your phone and camera. We provide drinks at each stop, but bringing a water bottle helps in the heat.
What time do tours start?
Most tours start in the morning — typically 9:00 or 10:00 am — when hawker centres are at their liveliest and the food is freshest. The KL nightlife tour starts in the evening. Exact times are confirmed when you book.
