Come hungry, leave happy

A little preparation makes a big difference. Here's everything you need to know before your food tour.

What to wear

Light, breathable clothing

Linen or moisture-wicking fabric — Malaysia is 30°C+ year-round with high humidity.

Comfortable closed-toe shoes

Hawker centres and old town streets can have uneven ground and occasional puddles.

Modest dress appreciated

When we walk near mosques or temples, covered shoulders and knees show respect to the community.

Rain jacket (monsoon months)

November–March in Penang and October–February in KL see frequent afternoon showers.

Avoid wearing white

Hawker food is saucy and sometimes enthusiastic about landing on your clothes. Dark colours are more forgiving.

What to bring

Cash (Malaysian ringgit)

Most hawker stalls are cash-only. Recommended: RM 50–100 for the day. ATMs are available near most meeting points.

Reusable water bottle

We provide drinks at every stop but topping up between stops keeps you comfortable in the heat.

Camera or phone

You'll want photos. Every stop is visually remarkable — wok flames, neon signs, hand-carved ice.

Small daypack

Keeps your hands free for pointing, eating, and gesturing enthusiastically.

What to expect on the day

  1. 1

    Arrive 5–10 minutes early

Tours start on time. Arriving a little early means you can settle in, meet your guide, and hear the opening story — which sets the tone for everything that follows.

  2. 2

Meet your guide with the blue badge

Look for the Simply Enak guide wearing a blue badge at the meeting point. If you're running late, WhatsApp us on +6 017 287 8929 and we'll wait or guide you in.

  3. 3

    Walk, eat, talk — repeat

The tour is a conversation, not a lecture. Your guide introduces each stall, you eat, you ask questions, you move on. 10+ tasting stops over 4–5 hours. Pace is relaxed.

  4. 4

    Come with questions

Why does char kway teow taste different in Penang? What's the story behind this stall? What does the owner do differently? Your guide loves this part — no question is too basic.

  5. 5

    No tipping required

We include everything in the tour price. You're welcome to tip your guide if you want to, but never feel obligated. The most useful thing you can do for us is leave a detailed review.

Dietary requirements

Malaysian food spans Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Peranakan traditions. Most dietary needs are well-catered for — here's what to know.

Not sure if your needs can be accommodated? Ask us before booking — we're happy to advise.

Common questions

Are there toilet breaks during the tour?
Yes! We start near a toilet facility and have bathroom breaks planned at 2-3 points during the tour. Most stalls have basic facilities, and we know which shopping centers have clean restrooms along the route. We pace the tour so you're never rushing or uncomfortable.
Can I book a tour as a private experience?
Every tour can be run privately for your group. Private tours mean your own guide, flexible start time, and a route tailored to your interests and dietary needs. Groups of 4 or more. See private tour options or message us to plan your tour.
Can I take photos during the tour?
Absolutely! We encourage photos — most guests want to remember Aunty Lim's smile or Uncle Tan's wok skills. Vendors are proud of their food and happy to be photographed. We'll also take group photos and can help you capture the perfect shot for Instagram or TripAdvisor.
Do you offer hotel pickup?
Hotel pickup is available as an add-on for private and tailored tours. For join-in tours, we meet at a central location that is easy to reach by Grab or public transport. We send detailed directions after booking, including how to get there.
How do I book?
Book directly on the tour page at simplyenak.com or message us on WhatsApp at +60 12-345-6789. We confirm within 3 hours during business hours, often sooner. No third-party platforms, no booking fees, no hidden costs — we keep it direct so there are no markups.
How long are the tours?
Most tours run 4 to 5 hours at a leisurely pace. We pace based on your group's energy and curiosity — we're not watching a clock. If a vendor has a story worth hearing about their 40 years of cooking, we stop and hear it. That's the Simply Enak difference.
How much does a food tour in KL cost?
Join-in tours are RM 285 to RM 359 per person, depending on which tour you choose. Private tours are quoted on request, usually for groups of four or more. Send us a message on WhatsApp and we'll put together something that works for your group.
How much walking is involved?
Approximately 3km walking distance over 4-5 hours, at a leisurely pace with plenty of stops. We pause at each stall for 20-30 minutes, giving you time to digest, take photos, and listen to vendor stories. Not a power walk — more like a stroll through the neighborhood with friends.
I have food allergies. Is it safe?
We take allergies seriously. Let us know when booking about any allergies — peanuts, shellfish, gluten, etc. We'll adjust the route and inform each vendor. Some vendors have dedicated allergen-free prep areas. For severe allergies, we carry epinephrine and know the nearest clinic. Your safety comes first.
I have mobility issues. Can I still join?
Yes. We walk about 3km at a relaxed pace with frequent stops, and most food stalls are at ground level. If you have specific mobility concerns, let us know when booking. We can shorten the route or choose stalls with easier access. Our private tours offer the most flexibility for adapting the pace and route.
Is the food spicy?
Malaysian food can be spicy, but we adjust for your tolerance. Many Chinese dishes serve chili separately — you add your own heat. Malay dishes tend to be spicier by default. We'll warn you before each stop and can request mild versions. Our goal is flavor enjoyment, not fire-breathing.
Is there parking near the meeting point?
Yes, there's parking near all our meeting points. For Chinatown tours, there's paid parking at Petaling Street market or nearby shopping centers. For Chow Kit, street parking is available. We'll send detailed parking instructions with your booking confirmation. Some areas have limited weekend parking, so arrive 10 minutes early.
What can I expect on a food tour?
You'll visit 8-10 food stalls over 4-5 hours, tasting 15+ different dishes. Your guide shares stories about the food, culture, and history — like why Aunty Lim's laksa recipe hasn't changed since 1982. Small groups (max 9 people), local prices, no tourist traps. Just real food, real stories.
What dietary options do you accommodate?
We handle vegetarian, halal, gluten-free, and most other dietary needs on our regular tours. Just tell us when booking and we will brief every vendor on your route. We have detailed guides for vegetarian, halal, and gluten-free guests. A few exceptions: vegan tours and certified halal require a private or tailored tour because the routes are more complex. Message us and we will figure out what works for you.
What happens if it rains?
Tours run rain or shine! Malaysia's rain is intense but brief — usually 20-30 minutes then sunshine returns. We have covered alternatives at most stalls and adjust the route if needed. Some guests say eating char kway teow while watching tropical rain is the highlight of the tour.
What if I need to cancel?
Free cancellation up to 48 hours before most tours, and 24 hours for some specialty experiences. We'll confirm the specific policy when you book. Life happens — flights get delayed, kids get sick. We're flexible and understanding, because we've been travelers too.
What's the minimum group size for private tours?
Private tours are available for groups of 4 or more people. We customize the route, pace, and food stops based on your group's preferences and dietary needs. Popular for corporate team building, family celebrations, or friends who want an exclusive experience. Message us on WhatsApp for a custom quote.
When will I receive confirmation?
We typically confirm within 3 hours during business hours (9am-6pm MYT), often within 30 minutes. For last-minute bookings same-day, message us on WhatsApp and we'll check vendor availability. Weekend tours fill up faster, so book 2-3 days ahead when possible.
